Best Mattress Without Springs

Our top picks for the best mattresses on the market that don’t utilize springs

If you are looking for a mattress made with no springs you may have realized that there are quite a few options on the market at varying price points. All foam mattresses, made without springs can be just as good, if not better than mattresses with springs, you just have to choose a quality brand and product. There are quite a few low quality “all foam” mattresses on the market that you will want to avoid. In this post we have listed our favorite mattresses made without springs, including options from memory foam to latex or futon mattresses. Mattresses made with no springs are becoming more and more popular and there are quite a few great options to choose from.

OUR RESEARCH: Our team runs mattress recycling facilities throughout the country. The facilities also receive returns of mattresses that customers do not like. We have analyzed over 500K mattresses and sleep products from all the major companies. We know which products are made well and which mattresses customers are keeping or returning.

What is inside an all foam mattress instead of springs?

All foam mattresses are becoming more and more popular in the mattress industry. Springs are used as the main support systems within a mattress. They help push back on your body and pressure points in order to provide spinal alignment and pressure relief. They also give mattresses their signature “bounce” that sleepers have become accustomed to. Today many mattress companies have ditched the innerspring units  and are making mattresses entirely out of foam. While the construction is different the design is the same. All foam mattresses use a heavy duty high density base layer of foam that goes where the spring unit would normally be. This heavy duty foam is very firm and supportive and provides the same purpose as an innerspring unit. Foam mattresses do not generally have as much bounce as an innerspring unit but they do offer amazing pressure relief and spinal alignment benefits. If you are thinking of purchasing a mattress without springs then there are a lot of amazing options on the market for you.

Are all online mattresses made without springs?

No, all online mattresses are not made without springs. Many online mattress companies use an individually pocketed coil spring unit that is comprised of hundreds of springs that can easily be compressed and shipped in a box to your door. This means, if you are wanting to purchase a mattress online you aren’t restricted to purchasing one without springs if you do desire the feel of a spring mattress.

What are the different types of mattresses made without springs?

There are a variety of different types of mattresses that can be made without the use of springs. Each of them has their own benefits and downsides.

Memory Foam – Memory foam mattresses are probably the most popular and well-known all foam mattresses on the market. Memory foam was designed by NASA and quickly became popular in the mattress industry for its pressure relief capabilities and ability to conform to the curves of the body. Memory foam mattresses will have a slightly different feel than an innerspring mattress and may take some getting used to if you have never slept on one before. Memory foam is generally one of the more affordably priced foam mattress options and can be a great all around mattress for a variety of sleepers. Many companies have opted to utilize “gel memory foam” which is simply memory foam that is infused with a cooling gel in order to help the mattress to sleep cooler, as memory foam notoriously sleeps hot.

Latex – Latex mattresses are one of the most popular natural mattresses on the market. Quality “all-foam” latex mattresses are generally one of the most expensive mattresses on the market. Latex is available in natural and organic options and comes from the rubber tree. It is made without any chemicals and offers hypoallergenic and eco-friendly benefits. If you want a natural sleep environment and are willing to spend a bit more, then a latex mattress could be a great option for you.

Cotton/Futon Mattresses – Similar to latex mattresses, futon mattresses are generally made with cotton and wool and are eco-friendly and hypoallergenic in nature. They are also flexible and can be used on the floor, on a futon frame or on a standard bed frame. Futons vary in price depending on the quality of materials inside and can run from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.

What do foam mattresses use for support instead of springs?

Foam mattresses use a heavy duty high density support foam as their base layer. This is the boots most layer of the mattress and it generally measures anywhere from 4-8” in thickness. This payer of support foam takes the place of a spring unit and is meant to support the body beneath your “comfort layers” in your mattress. A firmer mattress will generally have less layers on top of this support foam, while a softer more plush mattress will have more layers and be thicker.

Are non-spring mattresses supportive enough?

Yes, non-spring mattresses can be just as supportive as innerspring mattresses. In order to get proper support from any mattress you just want to make sure you spend the money and get a quality product. There are low quality innerspring mattresses just like there are low quality all-foam mattresses. A low quality mattress will break down more easily and likely will not provide the support that the majority of sleepers desire.

Pros and cons of mattresses without springs:

A mattress without springs. Has many benefits and some downsides when comparing it to a mattress with a spring unit inside. In the end it comes down to your specific preferences and needs.

PROS:

Price – In general an all foam mattress without springs will save you some money over purchasing an innerspring mattress with springs. This is generally because using a support foam as your base is more affordable than using a spring unit. However, an all foam latex mattress will be more expensive than a hybrid latex mattress with springs and foam.

Limits Partner Disturbance/ Motion Transfer – An all foam mattress is great at isolating movements and limiting the transfer of motion throughout the mattress. When one person rolls around or gets out of bed with a spring mattress often the other person can feel the bounce and movement, this is much less likely with a foam mattress. Have you ever seen the commercial with the person jumping on the bed next to a glass of wine, and the wine doesn’t spill? That is an all foam mattress.

Pressure relief – All foam mattresses are great at relieving pressure points on the body and hugging the bodies curves (especially memory foam mattresses).

CONS:

Different feel – The main con of an all foam mattress for some people is that is can feel slightly different than the traditional spring mattresses they are used to. An all foam mattress won’t have as much bounce and may hug the body differently than springs.

Watch out for low quality companies – With the introduction of mattresses without springs came an opportunity for low quality manufacturers to offer mattresses with low quality foam at extremely cheap prices. Since all mattresses look the same it may be tempting to purchase one of these low price point options. Just follow the general rule of “you get what you pay for” and try to buy mattresses made in the US and you should get a quality product with foam that will support your body and last door years to come.

Can you put a mattress mattress without springs on a platform bed?

Yes, you can put an all foam mattress on a platform bed. It is important however, to ensure that the mattress is made using quality support foam in order to provide proper support between bed slats.

Getting rid of your old mattress

After purchasing a new mattress you may be wondering how to get rid of your old one. The online companies do not offer mattress disposal services so you are on your own finding a way to get rid of it. Luckily, A Bedder World offers mattress disposal and recycling throughout the country. We have recycle dover 500K mattresses to date. Simply book a pick up online, put your items outside and POOF let us come take them off your hands. A single mattress costs around $80 to dispose of.

Overall, choosing a mattress without springs in it can be a great option. Just make sure you choose a quality product that comes from a reputable company. There are many low quality companies saturating the market that you want to stay away from.
