The saying “nothing lasts forever” can be applied to most man-made items and the mattress on your bed is no exception. With an expected lifespan of between 5 to 7 years, according to Sleepadvisor, the replacement of your mattress is inevitable.

Forethought is advisable in deciding which mattress to purchase as we theoretically spend around a third of our lives sleeping. With this in mind, below are a few questions to help you make an informed decision:

  • What is my available budget?
  • What size should the mattress be?
  • Should the mattress be firm or soft?
  • What’s good about my current mattress?
  • What is no longer enjoyable about my current mattress?
  • Who else sleeps on the bed?

Not all of us, however, have the spare time and the energy to research the depths of the internet to find our perfect mattress. We conveniently place our trust in well-known retailers to have done their homework on their products.

Ikea is a retail brand that has struck the right chord with millions of shoppers worldwide. The success of Ikea is on the one-brand philosophy of their production of simple, stylish furniture. The brief is that the furniture looks good and is durable. The added benefit is retailing their brand line for way less than other big brands.

Ikea offers a comprehensive range of mattresses, including; spring mattresses and foam mattresses.

To help you choose the best-suited mattress for your needs, read on as we share our research on our the best IKEA mattresses.

2 TYPES: Spring and All-Foam Mattresses

We have broken down the available mattresses that IKEA offers into 2 categories. Mattresses with springs (also called hybrid mattresses) and All-foam mattresses. In general all-foam mattresses are more affordable than spring mattresses but their comfort levels are all personal preference. Spring mattresses will have more support and give a more traditional “bounce” that you would expect from an innerspring mattress, whereas an all-foam mattress will hug your body more and have less bounce.

IKEA Spring Mattresses (Top 3)

Ikea spring mattresses all use spring coils to distribute the sleeper’s weight evenly to provide optimal support for the body and eliminate any unnecessary stress on the spine.

Ikea spring mattresses are also cooler to sleep on, with the individual spring construction allowing air to circulate and ventilate the mattress naturally.

In addition, these pocket spring mattresses utilize natural materials for comfort layers in their construction, such as:

  • Latex
  • Coconut fiber
  • Cotton
  • Wool

These materials help maintain a cool sleeping temperature allowing air to circulate within the springs.

The spring mattresses will also remain drier to the touch than any foam mattress. The natural materials used in the construction help wick away any moisture. This is an important consideration in hotter or damp locations nationwide.

Choosing a firm or medium-firm mattress to find your perfect sleep solution would be best. Along with your mattress of choice, the recommendation is to use a slatted bed base or mattress base.

Like all spring-style mattresses, Ikea mattresses are hard-wearing. Using a mattress topper offers additional comfort and helps protect the mattress for many years.

1. Haugesund Spring Mattress – TOP SELLER

Least expensive spring mattress with a medium-firm to firm feel

The Haugesund mattress is an extremely popular purchase, evidenced by its Top Seller status on the Ikea shopping page. With a price tag of $249.99, the affordability is spot on.

Added to this is this mattress choice comes with a 10-year limited warranty. For ease of delivery, the mattress is conveniently roll-packed for easy cartage home and setup.

The Haugesund Ikea mattress comes in two comfort level choices: medium-firm and firm, with the sides covered in a serviceable dark beige.

Construction

Thanks to the thick layer of soft-feel stretch fabric, the design allows the mattress to follow your body movements and contours. Individual-wrapped responsive pocket spring coils insulate your movements. This feature then ensures that you do not disturb your sleeping partner.

Ease of Use

The Haugesund mattress is a no-turn mattress designed to sleep on one side only. This is a great selling point, as there is no need to fight your mattress to turn it around.

This mattress choice also happens to be reviewed the most times, with a total of 838 buyer reviews giving an average rating of 4.4 out of 5.

Average customer ratings:

  • Ease of assembly/installation 4.8
  • Value for money 4.5
  • Product quality 4.5

  • Works as expected 4.4

This mattress does enjoy a very high percentage of positive reviews, with 581 shoppers awarding five stars. On the other hand, as opposed to only 58 shoppers giving a single star rating.

PROS

The many positive reviews show buyers are very happy and find the mattress comfortable and a good buy.

CONS

Looking at the one-star reviews, we noted several complaints about the product being too soft. The main complaint was the springs sagging shortly after purchase resulting in the mattress causing body aches.

A few reviews noted that, at first, the mattress felt too firm. The other complaint was the chemical smell when the new mattress was unwrapped and used.

2. Haugsvar Spring Mattress

Middle of the road price point and Medium-Firm Feel

ikea-spring-mattress
inside-spring-hybrid-ikea-mattress

If your budget allows and you are happy to spend $549 on a good night’s rest, the Haugsvar may be the right choice. The Haugsvar mattress is the Haugesund (first mattress on this list) mattress’s older brother and is built similarly.

The plus, though, is that the hybrid Hausvar mattress offers an extra layer for a more cushioned and slightly softer feel.

What exactly is a hybrid mattress? Ikea has combined individually-wrapped pocket springs with a memory foam layer that molds to your body.

The memory foam layer then enhances both the sleeper’s support and comfort. The mattress is available in the following sizes: full, king, and queen sizes. In addition, the mattress design offers three firmness levels. They vary from plush to semi-firm and firm, all finished in a dark gray cover.

Construction and Materials

Let’s learn more about this mattress. The individually wrapped pocket springs in this mattress work independently. The design then allows the memory foam mattress to conform to the sleeper’s body contours.

The top memory foam layer closest to the sleeper’s body provides extra comfort. Using natural materials to individually wrap the response coils assists in insulating movements so your bed partner is not disturbed when you move.

Three layers of memory foam offer high pressure-relieving capacity, which helps improve blood circulation to muscles and skin. An added feature that ensures you achieve a restful night’s sleep.

These comfort layers are this mattress’s stars. They include double 1.7 lb/cu.ft polyurethane foam layers and a third one made of polyurethane foam (1.8 lb/cu.ft). The third layer has high resilience and slightly higher thickness.

This cold foam layer offers a more comfortable night’s sleep. With it, the height of the Haugsvar mattress is 11 inches. The stretch fabric on the top of it moves with the sleeper to enhance comfort.

Ease of Use

The mattress is designed for use on one side only, so there is no need to turn. The mattress is also conveniently rolled up for easier transport and delivery. An added benefit is the 10-year limited warranty covering the entire mattress for the buyer’s peace of mind.

Reviews

Now that you, as the buyer, have a more in-depth understanding of this mattress, what do previous buyers say about their purchase? A total of 546 buyers have reviewed their purchase to date with an average rating of 4.1

Below we see the average customer ratings:

  • Ease of assembly/installation 4.7
  • Value for money 4.2
  • Product quality 4.1
  • Appearance 4.5
  • Works as expected 4

PROS

Of the 546 reviews, 347 gave their purchase five stars praising the enhanced comfort levels. Other users were happy to share that their mattresses helped ease their hip and back pain

Ikea offers a Love It or Exchange It mattress policy. If you’re not completely satisfied, you can exchange a mattress once within 90 days of the purchase. This seems a very fair policy, and the generous three months exchange period allows you to get a good feel for your bed.

CONS

Despite the extra layer of comfort, some buyers were still unhappy. Several reviewers complained that the mattress was too firm for comfort. Other reviews complained about its long-term quality. The main complaint was the mattress collapsed after a few months.

3. Hesstun Spring Mattress

Most Expensive Spring Mattress & Softest Feel

The Hesstun pocket spring mattress offers the buyer a combination of both excellent support and comfort.

Prices start from:

  • $499 for the full-size mattress.
  • $549 for a queen-size option.
  • $699 for a king-size Eurotop bed.

Construction and materials

What differentiates this spring mattress from the previous Ikea spring mattress products is the unique double layers of individually wrapped pocket springs.

The base layer consists of individually wrapped coils. The next layer consists of mini pocket springs. These are, in turn, topped with soft memory foam-filling layers. Which then contours to the natural curves of your body, enhancing the user’s comfort levels.

A clever design feature is the individually wrapped pocket coils to insulate your movements and not disturb your bed partner.

As with other Ikea spring mattresses, the stretch fabric topping on the mattress moves with the bed’s occupant to maximize comfort.

Ease of Use

The Hesstun mattress is conveniently a no-turn mattress, meaning you only sleep on the top. An added 10-year limited warranty ensures the buyer peace of mind.

Buyer Reviews

Visiting the product’s page, this product received a rather average rating of 3.8 out of 5. As this rating is lower than our other two favorites, let’s take a closer look.

Average customer ratings are:

  • Ease of assembly/installation 4.5
  • Value for money 3.9
  • Product quality 3.9
  • Appearance 4.4
  • Works as expected 3.8

A mixed bag of buyer ratings, with 85 customers giving the product a five-star rating. Thirty buyers rated the Hesstun as four stars, and the balance of reviews gave three and two-star ratings equally. Although 27 buyers were seemingly very displeased with their purchase and they gave the product just one star.

PROS

The positive reviews speak to the bed’s comfort levels, with it being soft yet firm and supportive. Another takeaway from the reviews is that buyers appreciated its coolness. This is thanks to the ventilation characteristics of the design.

Not everyone is going to feel the same way about a product. This is true of so many other consumer products in the market. In the same vein, no manufacturer will be able to satisfy everybody all of the time.

CONS

Most complaints highlight an unacceptable softness toward the middle of the bed, which results in the bed not matching their expectations. A few other complaints noted were not product performance or quality-related issues.

These reviews rather focused on the inconvenient delivery procedures experienced. Included is the poor customer service some reviewers received from the retailer themselves.

IKEA All Foam Mattresses (TOP 3)

Generally, foam mattresses tend to be less expensive than any internal spring or hybrid mattresses. This is due to the construction materials being less expensive.

Production costs are also more cost-effective, ensuring the poly foam mattresses cater to the low-budget buyer. Ikea offers a wide range of foam-based products.

Prices start at $99 for an entry-level twin-size foam mattress, while the king-size memory foam premium mattress retails from $699.

So let’s see which of the Ikea foam mattresses are our favorites.

The red “top seller” tag on the Ikea products page immediately catches your eye to highlight that this is one of their most popular foam mattresses.

According to Ikea, the dimensions of the Meistervik mattress make it a good choice for a day bed or a child’s extendable bed. Its low height of only 4.75 inches makes it a great choice for children’s bunk beds or your daybed.

This mattress is also particularly useful for family holiday trips as it takes up minimal space when rolled up.

Construction and Materials

This mattress, as evidenced by its budget price tag of $99, is a simple basic foam mattress. The mattress design is a single layer of 1.7 lb.cu.ft.poly foam for its core. Then, there is a slim padding of polyester/rayon blend foam. The mattress’s top layer is a cotton and polyester blend fabric cover.

Despite the mattress’s low height, it is still firm. This is, in turn, thanks to the resilience of the foam used, which also improves the bed’s stability. The mattress’s high-density foam construction also makes the mattress able to retain its structure and shape for longer.

Ease of Use

The easily removable fabric cover is machine washable. Ikea has even taken your child’s safety to heart by removing the zipper to prevent any potential choking hazard.

Bringing your new mattress purchase home is no sweat as it comes neatly rolled up for easy carrying.

  • Ease of assembly/installation 4.7

MYRBACKA-memory-foam-ikea-mattress
MYRBACKA-memory-foam-ikea-mattress-inside-layers

Reviews

A higher ticket price doesn’t necessarily translate into better ratings. With an Ikea review page rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars, this product does not meet most customer expectations.

Average customer ratings:

  • Ease of assembly/installation 4.3
  • Value for money 3.7
  • Product quality 3.7
  • Appearance 4.3
  • Works as expected 3.7

Complaints included indentations after only four months of usage. One customer likened the mattress to sleeping in a trench due to the compaction over time. A second complaint noted an increase in back pain.

What Did We Learn?

Ikea offers bang for your buck, and their mattresses are some of the most competitively priced options in their stores. Bear in mind, however, that low ticket prices mean cost-cutting. Their mattresses will not last as long as some of the other higher quality mattresses on the market. They are great for kids, guest rooms, trundle beds or utilizing for a year or 2 in a temporary residence or apartment.

These mattresses all also come in standard sizes and are not available in any slightly odd sizes like the popular olympic queen, cot size or 3/4 option that other manufacturers offer.

All manufacturers cut corners, which means that material quality and quantity suffer in most cases, but with tight household budgets, a little compromise has never hurt anyone. After all, some of the mattresses we reviewed do qualify for our best Ikea mattress title.
