A low profile bed frame is as simple as it sounds, it is “low to the ground”. Many customers choose a low bed frame due to the aesthetic appeal and minimal design that it gives to the bedroom. Low bed frames are on the rise in popularity as the minimalistic design trend continues to grow. In this article we will list all of our favorite low profile bed frames and give some benefits and insight on each.

What is considered a "low bed frame"?

A low bed frame is anything that allows your mattress to sits below the average height bed frames on the market. Keep in mind a platform bed does not utilize a box spring so your mattress will naturally sit and look lower than a metal bed frame with a box spring. A standard metal bed frame sits 7.5″ off the ground and has a 9″ box spring that sits on top of that. All of the options in this post are considered low profile bed frames and will sit low to the ground.

Standard bed frame vs platform bed

Not all bed frames are considered the same. The 2 major options are standard bed sets with a box spring or a platform bed.

OPTION 1 (Standard Bed): You can have standard metal bed frame that sits 7.5″ off the ground and is utilized with a box spring or (foundations). The mattress then sits on top of the box spring. A standard box spring is 9″ tall but can also be ordered in thinner profiles or you can choose to purchase separate bed slats. If you are looking for a low sitting bed your best option for this route would be to purchase a standard bed frame and put bed slats on top. Although, this does not provide the beauty of a designer bed set.

OPTION 2 (Platform Bed): Platform beds have become very popular over recent years. They utilize bed slats that are build into the bed frame so that you can simply put your mattress on top without a box spring. This makes your mattress sit lower and gives a modern and designer friendly appeal. If you are looking to achieve a low profile bed setup then a platform bed is likely your best option.

Benefits of a low profile bed

A lower sitting bed frame not only looks aesthetically pleasing it also provides many benefits within your bedroom and sleeping environment.

  • Sleeps cooler – Hot air rises, so thte lower your bed sits the cooler air you will be sleeping in.
  • Fits rooms with lower ceilings and actually gives the illusion that they are larger
  • Easy for shorter individuals to sit on the edge of the bed
  • Expands the utilization of your floor space. When your bed is closer to the ground you will find yourself utilizing your floor space to your advantage. For example, you can get away without purchasing a bedside table and can let the floor act as a minimalist side table.
