What Virginia Beach asks for if you use city pickup
These are Public Works Waste Management Group's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.
- Residents are encouraged to request this service when multiple items have been gathered rather than requesting multiple pickups of single items.
- Black trash carts should be placed curbside between 5 p.m. the day prior to your scheduled collection day and 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
- Where to put it: there should be at least three feet of clearance on all sides of the container (between the container and other containers, yard waste, limbs, bulky items, mailboxes, cable boxes, vehicles, etc.).
- Requests should be submitted three days (or more) prior to your regularly scheduled weekly trash pick-up day.
- Their accepted list is bulky/large items are considered items too large to fit in your black trash cart that you are unable to transport to the City Landfill & Resource Recovery Center. — it doesn't name mattresses either way, so ask before you put one out.
- On what they won't take at the curb: all trash must be inside the cart. No trash or other items, with the exception of yard waste or a bulky/large item that has been scheduled for pick-up, will be collected.

Haul it to Landfill & Resource Recovery Center
1989 Jake Sears Road. Landfill & Resource Recovery Center says: “Hours: 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday”. Limit: Trailers more than 10’ (feet) in length or with a dump bed are prohibited. Call (757) 385-4650 before you load up. Items to be deposited in the landfill must be placed inside of the convenience center containers. Proof of Virginia Beach residency is required for entry. Note that only residential vehicles are permitted to enter the landfill for disposal purposes. You'll need a truck or a van, and you do the loading.
Haul it to Landstown Transfer Station
1825 Concert Drive. Residents of SPSA's service area may receive free disposal of their household waste, limited to 12 visits per calendar year, at no charge at SPSA's transfer stations. Landstown Transfer Station Monday through Friday: 8 am to 5 pm, open for all SPSA service area residents and Saturday: 8 am to Noon, open for all SPSA service area residents. Limit: Proof of residency within the SPSA Service Area. Waste delivered that does not meet the above conditions will be charged the prevailing disposal fee, with a minimum fee of $20.00. All household waste, bagged or un-bagged, including furniture, mattresses, and small appliances that have a freon-free certification sticker (if applicable), is acceptable. Note that solid waste must be delivered in one of the following "private vehicle or rented pick-up truck.". You'll need a truck or a van, and you do the loading.
