1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations". There's one of those inside Stockton, listed below.

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Stockton asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Stockton's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • All bags or boxes must weigh 40 pounds or less when full and be strong enough to hold the items without breaking.
   • Place your discarded bulky items at the curb the evening before your scheduled pickup day.
   • Where to put it: place items at the curbside in the street in front of your residence and away from vehicles.
   • Items placed at the curb should measure no more than 3 cubic yards (measurements: 3 feet high, 9 feet long, and 3 feet wide).
   • Piles greater than 10 cubic yards will not be picked up and are referred to Code Enforcement for handling.
   • Residents must call their garbage company two weeks in advance of their requested appointment date.
   • Furniture Mattresses Carpets and pads Appliances are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
   • Up to six (6) 30-gallon bags of household waste or green waste.
   • Some things they won't take at the curb at all, including loose, unbagged items.

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Stockton?

   North county recycling center and sanitary landfill in Lodi is the nearest landfill, but its page doesn't say whether it takes mattresses. Call before you load up. Customers with UNCOVERED/UNSECURED LOADS must pay a double disposal fee or purchase a tarp. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Lodi, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
