1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations". There are 2 of those inside Irvine, listed below.

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Irvine asks for if you use city pickup

   These are WM Customer Service's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Up to four (4) items may be collected per time at no charge. Residents may request additional collection for a charge.
   • Residents should call WM Customer Service at least 48 hours in advance of their collection day to schedule a pick-up.
   • Their accepted list is bulky items include large, hard-to-handle household items such as furniture, appliances and electronic waste. — it doesn't name mattresses either way, so ask before you put one out.

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Irvine?

   You can, but check the price first — it is usually more than a pickup costs. Olinda Alpha Landfill in Brea does take mattresses — Orange County residents can now bring their mattresses to Prima Deshecha Landfill and Olinda Alpha Landfill to be recycled for free per mattress or box spring. Landfill fees will apply if mattresses are brought with other waste for disposal. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Brea, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
